Seven-seat rental

The honest version: count the bags, not just the seats.

The single most common mistake with a seven-seater is booking for the number of people and forgetting the luggage. With the third row folded up, boot space in a seven-seat SUV drops to roughly the size of a weekend bag. If seven of you are flying in with seven suitcases, the vehicle you actually need is a van.

Peugeot 5008 — seven seats, ideal for five or six people with full luggage, or seven on short hops.
Mercedes V-Class — eight seats and a genuine boot behind them; the comfortable choice for a full group.
Renault Trafic — nine seats, the most space per euro when the group is large and the drive is long.

Seven seats versus seven seats with luggage

Every seven-seat SUV is sold on the seat count, and the seat count is true. What changes is what sits behind the third row. In a Peugeot 5008 with all seven seats in use, the boot holds hand luggage and coats — enough for a day at Krka, not enough for seven people arriving on an international flight.

That is not a fault in the car; it is geometry, and it applies to every vehicle in the class. The useful way to choose is to count the suitcases first and the passengers second. Five or six people with a full set of bags are comfortable in a 5008. Seven or eight people with bags belong in a V-Class or a Trafic, where the luggage sits behind the last row rather than on laps.

Choosing between the three

Peugeot 5008 — an automatic SUV that drives like a normal car, parks in normal spaces and takes the coastal road easily. Best when the third row is occasional.
Mercedes V-Class — eight seats, automatic, with the space and quiet of a proper people carrier. The choice when the whole group travels together all week.
Renault Trafic — nine seats and the largest load area of the three. Manual, and the most space per euro for a big group.

Child seats and the law

Children under 150 cm must use an approved child restraint in Croatia, and the seat has to match the child's size, not just their age. Order them with the rental rather than at the airport: seats are limited stock in July and August, and one fitted before you arrive is one fewer thing to do in a car park after a flight. How many suitcases fit in a seven-seat car?

With all seven seats in use, a seven-seat SUV holds roughly hand luggage only. For seven people with full suitcases you need an eight or nine seat van, where the luggage sits behind the last row.

What is the difference between the V-Class and the Trafic?

The Mercedes V-Class seats eight, is automatic and is the quieter, more comfortable drive. The Renault Trafic seats nine, is manual, and offers the largest load area for the price.

Are child seats available with a seven-seater?
