Driving and parking in Split

Split itself is easy to drive around, but the historic centre is not built for cars. The streets in and around Diocletian's Palace are pedestrianised and the surrounding blocks are restricted to residents, so plan to park outside the old town rather than in it. Street parking works on a zone system with meters, and spaces closest to the centre fill early in summer.

Use car parks near the ferry terminal or along the western side of the centre, then walk in.
If your accommodation is in the old town, ask the host where guests actually park before you arrive.
For beach and day-trip days, leaving early avoids both traffic and the hunt for a space.

Day trips from Split by car

With a car in Split, most of Dalmatia is within easy reach for a day out:

Trogir — a UNESCO-listed old town on an islet, roughly 30 minutes west.
Omiš — dramatic canyon scenery where the Cetina meets the sea, around 40 minutes south.
Makarska — beaches beneath Biokovo mountain, roughly an hour and a quarter down the coast.
Krka waterfalls — around an hour away via the motorway towards Skradin.
