Why an automatic changes the Dalmatian drive.

Most rental fleets in Croatia are built around manual cars, because most local drivers use them. For a visitor who drives an automatic at home, the coast is exactly the wrong place to relearn a clutch: the D8 coastal road is a sequence of climbs, switchbacks and hill starts, and old town car parks are tight and sloped.

Automatics are limited stock everywhere in Croatia, not just here — reserve as early as you can for July and August.

If your dates are fixed and the automatic you want is taken, ask — a different class is often free on the same days.

Why automatic cars are scarce in Croatia

Croatia buys manual cars. Local drivers learn on them, they are cheaper to purchase, and rental fleets are bought to match local supply. That leaves a mismatch every summer: a large share of visitors arrive from countries where an automatic is the default, and they are all looking for the same small pool of cars.

The practical consequence is simple. In February you can decide on an automatic a week before you fly. In late July the automatics are committed long before the manuals, and the ones left are usually in the larger, more expensive classes. Booking an automatic is less about price than about being early.

Where the gearbox actually matters

On the A1 motorway it makes little difference; you sit in top gear for an hour at a time. It matters on everything either side of the motorway.

The D8 coastal road — long climbs out of every bay, blind switchbacks, and frequent hill starts behind a bus or a cyclist.
Old town parking — Trogir, Split and Šibenik put you on cobbles and slopes, often reversing into a gap with a queue behind you.
Ferry ramps — loading is a slow crawl up a steep steel ramp, one of the few places a clutch genuinely punishes an out-of-practice driver.
Island roads — Brač and Hvar climb hard from the ports, and the gradients are steeper than the map suggests.

Which automatics we run

Our automatics are spread across classes rather than clustered at the top, so choosing one does not force you into a premium car. A VW Golf or Škoda Octavia estate covers two adults with luggage comfortably; a Škoda Superb, Mercedes E-Class or GLC suits longer routes and business arrivals; the Peugeot 5008 seats seven; the Mercedes V-Class carries eight with real luggage space.

Booking an automatic for summer

Send your dates as early as you have them, even if the rest of the trip is loose — the reservation is a written quote you accept, not a prepayment, so an early request costs you nothing. Browse the fleet, note the automatic you would like, and send the dates. If that exact car is committed, we will say so and offer what is genuinely free rather than confirming and downgrading you later.
